Paediatric ENT Conditions
Dr Alison Carter provides expert care for children with a wide range of ENT conditions, from urgent concerns to long-standing issues requiring further investigation, treatment, or surgery. Many procedures (such as hearing tests, ear canal microsuction, nasoendoscopy, nasal cautery, skin prick testing, and neonatal tongue tie division) can often be performed during the consultation, ensuring efficient and comprehensive care.
Ear Conditions

Hearing Loss in Children – Comprehensive assessment with age appropriate hearing tests and treatment

Glue Ear (Otitis Media with Effusion) – A common cause of hearing difficulties in children due to fluid buildup behind the eardrum. Treatment options include monitoring, hearing aids, or grommet surgery.

Recurrent Ear Infections – Frequent outer or middle ear infections can cause pain, discharge, and hearing issues. Dr Carter offers tailored treatments, including antibiotics or surgical options if needed.

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction – Problems with pressure regulation in the middle ear, leading to muffled hearing and discomfort.
Nose Conditions

Nasal Congestion & Blockages – Persistent nasal obstruction may be due to allergies, enlarged adenoids, or other underlying conditions.

Adenoid Problems – Enlarged adenoids can contribute to nasal blockage, snoring, and ear issues.

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever & Environmental Allergies) – A common cause of nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose, often triggered by pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Diagnosis may involve allergy testing, and treatment options include antihistamines, nasal sprays, or immunotherapy.

Recurrent Nosebleeds (Epistaxis) – Common in children and often managed with simple treatments or, in some cases, nasal cautery.
Throat & Voice Conditions

Tonsillitis & Recurrent Sore Throats – Recurrent infections can significantly impact a child’s well-being. Dr Carter provides expert advice and, when necessary, tonsillectomy surgery.

Snoring & Sleep Apnoea – Sleep-disordered breathing in children can affect their energy, growth, and development. Dr Carter assesses and treats causes such as enlarged tonsils and adenoids using the intracapsular coblation adenotonsillectomy method.

Hoarseness & Voice Issues – Persistent voice changes in children may require specialist evaluation and treatment.
Neck & Airway Conditions

Laryngomalacia & Noisy Breathing – A frequent cause of stridor (noisy breathing) in infants, often resolving on its own but sometimes needing intervention.

Congenital & Acquired Neck Lumps – Neck lumps in children can be present from birth (congenital) or develop later (acquired).

Common congenital lumps include branchial cysts, thyroglossal cysts, and dermoid cysts, while acquired lumps may result from infections, reactive lymph nodes, or, in rare cases, more serious conditions. A thorough assessment helps determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
Neonatal
Tongue Tie

Tongue Tie – A condition where the tissue under the tongue (lingual frenulum) is too tight, restricting movement. In neonates, this can affect breastfeeding and bottle-feeding due to difficulty latching, prolonged feeding times, and weight gain concerns.

If needed, a division of the tongue tie (frenulotomy) can be performed to improve feeding.

PLEASE NOTE: Prior to tongue tie division, it is essential to have had sufficient feeding support from a lactation consultant or infant feeding team to identify any modifiable factors.
